Very often, a single Chinese word can be translated into many different English words so anyone can easily choose an inappropriate one from the long list of results of an electronic dictionary. The first two characters ?? could mean: pause, temporary as well as suspend.
To make it harder, Chinese doesn't have word inflections either.
Perhaps this sign on a convenience store counter should be: "Temporarily closed" or how about "Next counter please"?
